Festive occasions were days for Family union. People from all walks of life joined together played ,sang,recited and enjoyed life. For the Malayalees Onam thus was an occasion to remain happy with their kith and kin. We made preparations well before the arrival of Onam. Varuthupperi (Banana Chips) both salted as well as with jaggery add flavour to the meals that were served during Onam days. Another part of the meals were Boiled Bananas ( Pazham Puzhumgiyathu) . Various games were played in villages as part of Onam.

Now the Onam celebration has met with sea change. People very seldom prepare chips in their houses. All of them go to nearby shops and get chips prepared. There are two class of chips. Those prepared in Cocunut oil and those which are cooked otherwise. Most of the Nenthrakkaya and Pazham comes from the neighbouring states. Actually nowadays it is not the Keralite but the Tamil who prepares for Onam. After and before luch or dinner the family sit before the TV set and enjoys specially televised movies.

Violence on Harthal Day

The Anniversary Celebrations of the formation of State of Kerala was on the shadow of a Harthal Call given by the Bharatiya janatha Party. It is not a matter of debate here whether the Harthal call was necesssary or not. But when I switched on the Surya News late in the night I was shocked to find an assault against a poor lady by an organised group, who claims to honour the "izzad" of the women.



The capital of Kerala , the Gods Own Country witnessed this hideous and horrible incident when the First Woman President of the Country was attending a huge gathering where a majority of the crowd were women representing various Kudaumbasree Units.



Let us condemn this dreadful event loudly. Let all Political Parties realise the right of the common man in this world. The right of the un-organised against the organised.

What we need is not only action against the person who did this act, but a loud condemnation against the Leaders of the Party which led the rally in which this incident took place. The Policemen who remained mere spectators and the Press especially the Print right from Malayala Manorama who turned blind to this news report released by Surya T.V.
